چکیده

A number of studies have shown that syllables play an important role in visual word recognition in Spanish. We report three lexical decision experiments with a masked priming technique that examined whether syllabic effects are phonological or orthographic in nature. In all cases, primes were nonwords. In Experiment 1, latencies to CV words were faster when primes and targets shared the first syllable ( ju.nas-JU.NIO) than when they shared the initial letters but not the first syllable ( jun.tu-JU.NIO). In Experiment 2, this syllabic overlap could be phonologicalþ orthographical (vi.rel-VI.RUS) or just phonological (bi.rel-VI.RUS). A syllable priming effect was found for CV words in both the phonologicalþ orthographical and the phonological condition. In Experiment 3 we compared a ‘‘phonologicalsyllable’’ condition (bi.rel-VI.RUS) with two control conditions (fi.relVI.RUS and vir.ga-VI.RUS). We found faster latencies for the phonological-syllabic condition than for the control conditions. These results suggest that syllabic effects are phonological in nature.

Phonology as the source of syllable frequency effects in visual word recognition: evidence from French.

In order to investigate whether syllable frequency effects in visual word recognition can be attributed to phonologically or orthographically defined syllables, we designed one experiment that allowed six critical comparisons. Whereas only a weak effect was obtained when both orthographic and phonological syllable frequency were conjointly manipulated in Comparison 1, robust effects for phonolo...

Phonological units in speech segmentation and phonological awareness

This paper explores the relationship between phonological units in speech segmentation and phonological awareness by investigating Japanese Brazilians living in Japan. The first experiment investigated the size of the phonological unit in speech segmentation using the Japanese materials and methodology in Otake et al. (1993). As for French subjects in the earlier study, the miss rates showed an...

Visual word recognition of multisyllabic words

Please cite this article in press as: Yap, M ory and Language (2009), doi:10.1016/j.jm The visual word recognition literature has been dominated by the study of monosyllabic words in factorial experiments, computational models, and megastudies. However, it is not yet clear whether the behavioral effects reported for monosyllabic words generalize reliably to multisyllabic words. Hierarchical reg...

Running Head: PHONOGRAPHIC SUBLEXICAL UNITS Phonographic sublexical units in visual word recognition

Recent models of visual word recognition assume that sublexical orthographic-phonological information is organized according to an onset-nucleus-coda scheme (Plaut, McClelland, Seidenberg, & Patterson, 1996; Jacobs, Rey, Ziegler, & Grainger, 1998, but see Coltheart, Curtis, Atkins & Haller, 1993 for an alternative view). In this study we test the hypothesis that onsetnucleus-coda subsyllabic co...
